Weird Book Room
How did I not know about the Weird Book Room at abebooks.com until now? I definitely need a copy of Acrobat Hamster. I do NOT need a copy of Electricity in Gynecology, though.
Thanks, JoAnn Jacoby!
political shenanigan
This display of books (“Ivanka Trump: Rewriting the Rules for Success” was put together in a bookstore (possibly in California?) by a librarian (according to the “inside knowledge” of a Facebook commenter). Titles in the display include Children of the Self Absorbed, Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, and No More Narcissists!
Thanks, Simona Mkrtschjan!
Mollat bookstore shenanigan

The Librarie Mollat, a bookstore in Bordeaux, France, has been Instagramming images of their employees and customers with book covers. Some of them are so perfectly matched it seems unreal!
Thanks, Tom McBride and Bored Panda.
bookstore shenanigan for Women’s History Month

Loganberry Books in Cleveland, Ohio turned all the male-authored books in the store page-edges-out to draw attention to women authors during Women’s History Month.
Thanks, Lisa Lister!
excellent literary prank (even if it’s fake)
Video made by Generic Theater in Virginia in 2011. As this explanatory article says, “Why it’s gone viral four years after the play stopped running is anyone’s guess! The Internet is a strange place.” Thanks, Emily Lloyd!
weddings in libraries
Weddings in libraries, bookstores, and other bookish places. I suppose it’s not really a shenanigan if the library makes money by hosting weddings — but it might feel like a shenanigan to the brides and grooms and their guests! I wish BuzzFeed had found some photos of same-sex weddings in libraries, though. They do happen.
food truck is a book truck
Mexican publisher Fondo de Cultura Económica turned a food truck into a bookmobile and is traveling around California offering Spanish-language children’s books for sale. (An article refers to the truck as a “library,” but as far as I can tell, it is a commercial enterprise.) Thanks, Feminist Library on Wheels!
bookstore shenanigan
Somebody (probably not staff, but I’m not sure) turned around a whole bunch of books in the mystery section of a Barnes and Noble bookstore, making them particularly mysterious. I don’t know much about this image and would be glad to get the details. Thanks, PotaDOS and Sundress Publications!
Introducing … the Biblio-Mat!
The Biblio-Mat is a one-of-a-kind (so far!) vending machine filled with antiquarian books. It’s at The Monkey’s Paw, a Toronto bookshop. Customers pay $2 to try their luck. If the results in the video are typical, I would guess customers will be very satisfied, though perhaps not enough to seek to “collect all 112 million titles.” Thanks, BoingBoing and the Paris Review!
