Biblioburro donkey library in Colombia

Biblioburro is a traveling library in Colombia set up by Luis Soriano in 1990. You can read the CNN article from 2010, a NYT article from 2008, the Wikipedia entry, or a children’s book. Or maybe you’d like to watch a YouTube videoPBS will broadcast a program on it tonight (July 19). Thanks, Dina Wood!

A hawk in the Library of Congress! An actual live hawk!

A hawk somehow made its way into the Library of Congress this week. It has now been safely captured and will be released back into the wild. Thanks, David Weinstock!

Kitten Needs a Job

This video from SaveOhioLibraries.com (with the help of the Capital Area Humane Society) points out how public libraries help people find work. I like when the kitten prints out her resume. If you want more, see the hat outtakes! Thanks, Dina Wood!

Skateboarding dog supports the NYPL

The New York Public library invited Tillman, the skateboarding dog, to skate in its main branch in support of public libraries. Turns out his favorite books are Clifford the Big Red Dog and Voltaire’s Candide. Thanks, Ruth Hughes and Karen Nipps!

Wily Raccoon in Brooklyn Public Library

A raccoon (more specifically, a “wily” raccoon) broke into the basement of the Brooklyn Public Library in July of 2010. Plenty of snappy commentary from all concerned. Apparently, the raccoon may still be down there a week later. Thanks, Kris Kanthak!

Mule library!

In Venezuela in 2007, mules carry a lending-library of books to people in remote areas. Not really a shenanigan, more of a wonderful idea, but still, mules carrying books! That’s cool. More here. (Thanks, BoingBoing!)

Don’t Let the Bedbugs Bite

Greene: Don’t Let the Bedbugs Bite (Denver Post article). Denver Public Library, September 22, 2009. http://www.denverpost.com/news/frontpage/ci_13390297 This one is not a lighthearted shenanigan but a sad story. (Thanks, Steve Lawson!)

Addendum, August 2012: bedbugs shut down a library in Middletown, CT. Thanks, David Weinstock!
