Kansas City library parking garage
The parking garage for the Kansas City Public Library looks like a shelf of books! Awesome. Why can’t all parking garages be works of art? (Now I’m thinking of a parking garage in my hometown, Rochester NY, which looked a lot like the Guggenheim.) The people of Kansas City even had some say in which titles would be included. Thanks, BoingBoing!
Libraries celebrate National Gaming Day … with games (duh)
On Saturday, November 13, 2010, more than 1800 libraries in the U.S. and elsewhere will celebrate National Gaming Day by providing board games, video games, and other kinds of games for their patrons to play.
This is one of those shenanigans that kinda loses its punch by being library-sanctioned. But, game on, gamers, and those to whom the games are new. Thanks, BoingBoing!
Librarian Zombie Walk
Urban Librarians Unite organized a zombie parade for Halloween in support of library funding. Better undead than unread! Pictures here if you’re on Facebook. Thanks, Jenna Freedman!
Librarians do not react to farts.
Kid takes his fart machine to the library. Notice that the librarians are unfailingly professional at all times; they don’t react at all. Some of the patrons react, but politely. It’s a triumph of the human spirit, really.
Dewey Decimal Rap
Hi, my name is Melville Dewey! Nice to meet you, how you doing? This is surprisingly catchy and funny. New Hanover County Public Library, Wilmington, North Carolina, 2009. Make sure to watch the excellent dance moves at the end. Other library song videos made by library staff or library school students include Libraries Will Survive and I Want to Be a Librarian. And of course there are plenty of videos made by students or other patrons, like Library Thriller or the excellent Library Girl.
87th Annual Masters of Library Science Croquet Tournament
New Hanover County Public Library, Wilmington, North Carolina, 2010. This “croquet tournament” is more like miniature golf, with “holes” in various departments of the library. Thanks, David Weinstock!
Skateboarding dog supports the NYPL
The New York Public library invited Tillman, the skateboarding dog, to skate in its main branch in support of public libraries. Turns out his favorite books are Clifford the Big Red Dog and Voltaire’s Candide. Thanks, Ruth Hughes and Karen Nipps!
Read to a Unicorn
April Fool’s Day 2010 programming at the Johnson County Library in Overland Park, Kansas. The unicorns are magical animals that are great listeners. Thanks, Emily Lloyd!
DANCE This Flash Mob @ Seattle Library
Choreographed dance performance at the Seattle Public Library, July 1, 2010. To the tune of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” Thanks, Daryll Stevens!
Wily Raccoon in Brooklyn Public Library
A raccoon (more specifically, a “wily” raccoon) broke into the basement of the Brooklyn Public Library in July of 2010. Plenty of snappy commentary from all concerned. Apparently, the raccoon may still be down there a week later. Thanks, Kris Kanthak!
