Erin Blakemore on women’s reading rooms and the problem of “library loafers.” Thanks, Dina Wood!
library hedgehog
In case you need a little palate cleanser after that last post, here’s a picture of Quilliam, the hedgehog of the Cleveland Heights – University Heights Public Library.
Quilliam makes his home in the teen area of the Lee Road branch.
Thanks, Simona Mkrtschjan!
Please do not let Max into the library.
Library unknown. May not even be real. I don’t know.
Thanks, Diane Westerfield!
social media shenanigans
The librarians at Martinborough Library in Wellington, New Zealand posed for some excellent “Game of Tomes” photographs. Thanks, Esau Katz!
Also, this happened on Facebook. Thanks, Sarah Milteer!
“Book Spine Poetry Trash”

The Los Angeles Public Library and the Houston Public Library are expressing their baseball rivalry via an excellent “book spine poetry trash” battle.
Thanks, Dan Rather!
I tried to find a book spine to express my own feelings about this, but there don’t seem to be any books titled “Indifferent” or “I Don’t Care” or “Sports Rivalries Are Meaningless.”
Keeping Up with the Librarians
So, in case you haven’t heard, librarians at Invercargill City Libraries in New Zealand did a “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” parody photo and put it on their Facebook page with this text: “It has been 10 years since the Kardashians first graced our screens. To celebrate, our social media team decided to have a totally impromptu, definitely not planned, photo-shoot. — with Sandra Rought, Marge Colley Miller, Christine Landrum, Marc Moore, Tl Thorn, Shaun Stephanoff, Gail Groeneveld, Emma Whatmore, Stephen Leung, Elaine O’Shea, Sue Watson Hess, Anette Norström and Sandra Dee.”
For more information, see this Buzzfeed post, and for once, you can actually read the comments — lots of people saying they’d rather watch this show than the one it’s parodying.
Thanks, Sue Spengler and others!
Pack Horse Library
In the 1930s in Kentucky, women on horseback delivered library books, traveling over 100 miles per week, as part of a WPA initiative to increase employment and literacy.

Thanks, Linda Gresham!
lack of a shenanigan
Is a lack of a shenanigan a shenanigan? The Forest Grove, Oregon police log for August 2, 2017 states:
* A woman contacted police to report that library staff members were worshiping Satan. Officers found no explicit evidence of occult activity occurring at the library.
Thanks, Joan Petit!
book cover quilts
The East Bank Regional branch of the Jefferson Parish Library in Metairie, Louisiana is currently displaying these excellent book cover quilts and more. All photos are by Laura Albana Hoffpauir.
so many shenanigans
I went on a road trip with my family and a whole bunch of library shenanigans (and one museum shenanigan) piled up.

The Hermitage Museum keeps 74 cats on site to protect its treasures from rodents!

Gloria Gaynor disco party at the Library of Congress in May, yes, this is for real. You know you wish you could go.

“Quirky photo project” by Elise Schimke at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

The Folger Shakespeare Library apparently gets pretty cold, but researchers can borrow hand-knit shawls while on site. Thanks, Lynne M. Thomas!

And speaking of library-themed clothing, library book leggings are available from Kickin Leggings (this ad showed up in my Facebook feed, so Facebook isn’t totally useless I guess).
