Levar Burton can literally do anything because he read a book

levarA new version of the Reading Rainbow theme song, in which Levar Burton goes power-mad.

The end?

Thanks, Jezebel!

Addendum, same day: I’ve just noticed that in the video we see “quotes” from, it seems, L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but in fact three of the four quotes are from the MGM film: “Now I know I have a heart, because it’s breaking,” says the Tin Man, but only in the movie; “I am Oz, the Great and Terrible” says Oz, only in the movie (though Dorothy does refer to him as a Great and Terrible Humbug in the book); “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain,” says the Wizard, but only in the movie. Dorothy does say “There is no place like home” in the book, but she says it soon after meeting the Scarecrow, not to get herself home with ruby slippers (in the book, the slippers are silver, anyway), and she doesn’t use the contraction. If you don’t believe me, here’s the full, searchable text of Baum’s book from Google Books: books.google.com/books?isbn=0486206912

400 robotic books form a honeycomb sculpture

honeycombTo celebrate 400 years of the Bristol Central Library, animatronics company Rusty Squid (with artists, engineers, and designers) built this amazing moving, creaking honeycomb hive sculpture out of four hundred hardback books. Andrew Cox, a librarian at the BCL, says: “We embrace the digital but we all still love books and the book hive is a wonderful blend of art and engineering, reminding us of the intrinsic beauty and love affair we have with books as tangible items.” Watch the video for the full effect. Thanks, Alicia Bailey of Abecedarian Gallery!

flying a drone around the NYPL

If I’d been in charge of this oddly beautiful shenanigan, I would have started at 2:02 and then circled around to the beginning after we see the drone. Thanks, Dina Wood!

Russian library cat wears bow tie, is cute

enhanced-buzz-16370-1379440241-0As Ryan Broderick of Buzzfeed puts it: “Oh My God, There’s A Cat In Russia That Wears A Bow Tie And Works As A Librarian. The world is a beautiful place.”

Thanks, Kathleen Kirk (and others, but Kathleen was first).

Best “shh” ever? Twerking at the library

“Caramel Kitten” twerks at a bookdrop and inside a library. (She twerks at a lot of other everyday places, too.). A little bit NSFW, depending where you W. Her “shh” at 0:21 made me laugh. Thanks, BoingBoing!

Addendum, October 10, 2013: More library twerking, this time at the Brooklyn Public Library. Thanks, Brooklyn Blowback!

Student film: a librarian’s dream

This charming student project was filmed at Oberlin’s Mudd Library. I am appalled, however, that a librarian’s dream would involve book throwing! Thanks, Ed Vermue.

A library version of the Beastie Boys video “Sabotage,” shot at the Francis W. Parker School in Chicago.  Here’s the original video, for comparison. Thanks, BoingBoing and NYPL.

The Two Ronnies: Shouting in the Library

We here at Library Shenanigans have pointed you toward The Two Ronnies before, but we must do it again. Here’s the shouting in the library sketch. Thanks, David Kay!

longest book domino chain ever

Record-breaking domino chain at the Seattle Public Library! Time-lapse photography shows the set-up. Over 2000 books go down. I particularly like the picnickers’ tableau! Thanks, BoingBoing.

Similarly, at the Colorado School of Mines in 2017:
