a Hulk statue at the library?
The Northlake Public Library in Northlake, Illinois is hoping to raise money to purchase a nine-foot statue of the Hulk to promote its collection of graphic novels and comics. The perks for donating are pretty awesome, including, for just $20: “A librarian…will dress up as a comic character and take a picture of him/herself in random places in Northlake holding up a speech bubble. You send us what you want said in the speech bubble.” I wonder if the Incredible Hulk would get along with the Credible Hulk.

Lego librarians, Oranges and Peaches
Lego recently introduced a librarian minifigure holding a copy of Oranges and Peaches, which is a bit of an inside joke for librarians (though really, in the age of Google, are there any truly inside jokes any more?).
Oranges and Peaches (a misunderstood Origin of Species) is an imaginary book made real; full story here. (The tale almost certainly originated in the 1995 movie Party Girl; a reference to it appeared in a scholarly article the following year.)
The description of the Lego librarian leaves something to be desired: it contains references to overdue books and shushing, not most librarians’ idea of the important part of our work. But of course, the librarian minifig has already been repurposed: Kristin Bell has made a Lego Viking librarian (something we all need in our minifig collection). I might also like to see mash-ups with the Warrior Woman or Medusa, but maybe not the Street Harassment Construction Worker.
Thanks, Joan Petit!
Small plush squids say “RAWR”
Anybody know where this takes place? Or who made it? Or anything?
Thanks, Carol Dickerson!
Addendum May 3: Carol tells me it’s the Trinity University Library in San Antonio, Texas.
Ripon College After Dark: Danger in the Library
Scary AND hilarious video and event at Lane Library, Ripon College, Ripon, Wisconsin. I wonder if we should do this at Tutt Library. Thanks, David Graham!
Jocasta Nu, Jedi Librarian
Here’s an excellent short piece on the library and librarian in Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones, with a link to a ridiculously detailed video about the Jocasta Nu action figure. (Sample quote: “This [light saber hilt] does have the little hook on the end of it where it could have possibly attached to a belt, but she doesn’t have the little hole in the side so she can’t attach it to her belt…”)
Jennifer, author of the piece, rightly complains about the poor quality of the reference interview between Jocasta Nu and Obi-Wan. She holds herself back from making a fuss about the fact that the library shelves appear to be filled with bands of light, sooo futuristic except that, apparently, you have to go to the library in order to access these digital texts.

Flash mob at Tutt Library, Colorado College
Man, I wish I could have seen this. It took place on Tuesday, February 12, at 8:30 p.m., and lasted 3 minutes and 16 seconds, the duration of the song “The Harlem Shake” by Baauer (2013, more information here).
The UT-Austin library also took part in this meme:
Thanks, Steve Lawson and Joan Petit!
Oreo ad library shenanigan
Apparently, this ad aired during the Superbowl yesterday. I missed it, but several people let me know about it. I only wish people really did whisper whenever they were in the library. I confess I have shushed, and been shushed, both. Thanks, everybody!
Books perform The Nutcracker at the University of Maryland
A fantastic holiday greeting from the University of Maryland library.
Thanks, Ed Vermue!
alone in the library
Did you know that librarians get up to shenanigans when they are alone in the library? Well, they do. Thanks, Iris Jastram!
“Gangnam Style” at the University of Maryland library
With big shenanigans like this, involving hundreds of people, I always wonder how much the library staff was involved. Did they get advance warning? Did they give permission? Did they plant the idea for the shenanigan in the first place? The Facebook page for the event suggests the library at least wasn’t against it. I know we would be pretty psyched to have something like this happen at Tutt. Thank you, David M. Kay, M.L.S.!
